If you are trying to find happiness through a new career, check out some
of these books from the Wolfner collection, compiled by Reader Advisor
Paul Mathews.

 


Able Scientists--Disabled Persons: Biographical Sketches Illustrating
Careers in the Sciences for Able Disabled Students by S. Phyllis Stearner.


Biographical sketches of twenty-seven persons with disabilities who have
become scientists. They share their experiences in the belief that they
are typical of other disabled scientists and young people determined to

Animal Care 


Guide to careers dealing with both wild and domesticated animals.
Discusses job duties, salary ranges, work environment, and required
education level for such occupations as animal trainer and shelter
employee, naturalist, park ranger, pet groomer, veterinarian, veterinary
technician, zookeeper, and more. RC 63612.



 


Careers for Women without College Degrees by Beatryce Nivens.


This guide is designed for the woman who never attended or finished
college, but wants to either enter the work force or improve her position.
Nivens offers information on how the reader can apply her skills and
interest to a job. Also included is information on applying for jobs and

Chronicles of Courage: Very Special Artists by Jean Kennedy Smith.


Smith, founder of an organization that provides artistic opportunities for
people with disabilities, interviews artists who have found ways to
express themselves. Edited by George Plimpton, her book profiles people
involved in a wide range of artistic endeavors, and includes a
 disabilities awareness guide, a glossary, and a listing of organizations

Freedom for the Blind: The Secret Is Empowerment by James H. Omvig.


A blind attorney and rehabilitation professional draws upon his own
knowledge and experience to outline some ways blind people can enrich and
improve their lives and careers. Omvig promotes the development of new
philosophies and strategies that challenge traditional methods of
rehabilitation for blind persons in the United States. RC 55216, BR 14467.


 


How to Do Just about Anything by the Reader’s Digest Association.


In this comprehensive guide to solving common household problems are such
diverse topics as making a pie crust, fixing a squeaky door, curing
laryngitis, and how to get your rent deposit returned. Skills and tools
needed to complete most jobs are suggested, as well as advice on when to

I'd Rather Be Working: A Step-By-Step Guide to Financial Self-Support for
People with Chronic Illness by Gayle Backstrom.


Author with fibromyalgia offers a guide to finding a job that can
accommodate a chronic illness or disability. Discusses the Americans with
Disabilities Act, government programs, education and training, assistive
technology, and self-employment opportunities. Provides real-life examples
and resources and includes exercises to assess abilities and limitations.

Mary Kay, You Can Have It All: Lifetime Wisdom from America's Foremost
Woman Entrepreneur by Mary Kay Ash.


Ash, who has become successful as the head of Mary Kay Cosmetics, offers
advice for women who want to achieve their goals of having fulfilling
careers while still being wonderful wives and mothers. Ash, whose
priorities are God first, family second, and career third, believes that
women must always set these same priorities for themselves in order to be

Doug Hardy.


Step-by-step guidebook with updated basics of job searching for
first-timers, career changers, and those over fifty. Topics include the

best-deal negotiation. Discusses networking, interviewing, and defining

Now, Discover Your Strengths by Marcus Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton.


A how-to guide for managing individual strengths and building an effective
organization, based on a study of individuals who have succeeded in their
careers. "To excel in your chosen field and to find lasting
satisfaction...suspend whatever interest you may have in weakness and
