[Users] "read" messages in MSOE6

I'm using JAWS8 with Outlook ?Express 6 in a Win XP Home, SP 2 system.  I notice that messages never appear to be marked as "read"; the "unread" label is persistent.  Or, is this a JAWS 8 issue?
