I've done my best to stay out of this conversation. Really I have. *smile*
My father was a World War two veteran. Served on the submarines in the
Pacific. Both my brothers served in Vietnam when it was definitely not
popular to do so. So did my cousins, two of whom have never been the same,
because of TSD. My nephews have served in Iraq. Two in the 1991 wartime,
four now.
None of my family served because they were gung ho on killing others. All
of them were scared, feeling they might not return home again. Most of them
were eighteen or nineteen when they went overseas to fight.
Every one of them, and their comrades, need and deserve our support, whether
we agree with why they are there or not.
Some came home agreeing with why we are or were there, some came home with a
differing point of view. All came home different. Some respecting life
more, some not.
My father was thanked for his service, by many who were grateful not to be
overrun by another way of life.
My brothers and cousins were spat at and harassed by those who chose not to
fight. Life for the Vietnam Veteran was not pleasant, during or after their
service.
My nephews were, at first, treated with respect for their decision to serve.
Now, many treat them with similar rhetoric as I have seen here.
You can agree or disagree with why we are there. You can like or dislike
our president. You should not, however, treat those who fight for what they
believe are other's freedom.
It is because of these people that you have the right to say what you wish
here without being looked up by some officer for overstepping your bounds as
a citizen.
No matter what you think of the reasons behind our being in Iraq, I hope you
respect those who serve our country, doing the job you would not do.
