What KB5UJM has to say:
Hi all, Well first off I am 5'6 blond hair cut in the military style of very short, blue eyes 165 in shape. As you can see I am very proud to serve as a United States Coast Guard Auxiliarist. Yes I am blind and volunteer to serve in uniform and I have been doing this for ten years now. I have traveled teaching leadership and management school around the United States, served on a ship at sea, and completed Coast Guard reserve boot camp just to name a few things the Auxiliary has opened up to me. I have worked for the Commandant of the Coast Guard in Washington DC and had some very cool experiences. I hope you will consider also joining.

Now I am sure you are asking, "What can a blind person do to serve the military? Well the answer is, what can you bring to the table to serve others? Are you good with computers, love to write, a ham operater or other form of radio, just about any skill can be put to use as long as you are willing to do your part. We don't have time and I will not help to recruit the lazy blink. So, if you want in, you had better mean it and help stand the watch. The Auxiliary is all volunteer so you won't make any money for your service. You will have to buy your own uniforms and equipment and the cost ranges about $300.00 for a basic set of uniforms. There is a used uniform exchange where you may be able to get used servicable uniforms for much cheeper than new. Some may be asking why would I want to give my time for no money? The world has always told blind people that the military is off limits to them. The Auxiliary isn't the same as active duty or reserve military service, but it is service in the uniform of the United States and that alone makes it worthit. check it out by going over to http://www.cgaux.org

I am also currently studying law at ST Marys University School of Law here in San Antonio. My best take on this is that all should strive to meet their goals. I wasn't happy in my current job (I was teaching assistive technology and wanted to help change the rules to get more equipment into the hands of the blinks who need it. I can say that law school is a huge challange but like anything you always get out of something what you put into it so always try your best. I plan to practice military law and to always strive for full inclusion of the blind as full members of society.

I live in Texas with my girlfriend and our many dogs, cats, birds, and anything else that walks through the door. I am completely blind and use a Seeing Eye dog named Snickers who is a chocolate lab and we go everywhere including studying law in Europe for the summer. Speaking about blinks for a minute stop being lazy. Yes I understand that most blind people don't have jobs, I get it that there are issues, but part of the problem comes from our side of the fance. So, get off your butt and above all else LEARN BRAILLE!!! If you can't read then you are missing skills such as sentance structure, proper spelling, and other things that can only be passed to you through feeling the page layout not by listening to it on speech. Why do I say this, because I hated Braille as a child and I'm paying for it now as I try to build up my skills as fast as I can. Trust me on this or you will pay for it too. Okay, end of that lecture.

I am also a Ham radio operater which is something I think anyone who loves to meet new people should get into. No you don't have to learn Morris Code anymore but you can if you want to. Check it out by visiting www.handihams.org.

Take care, and hope you enjoied reading a little about me.
